Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence

A three-day institute for community activists, domestic violence workers, practitioners in the criminal and civil justice systems, human service providers, and others who take leadership in their community’s efforts to improve the effectiveness of intervention in domestic violence cases. This institute is designed to help participants:
- assess their community’s current response
- build consensus to reform system response
- develop a strong interagency approach to intervention
- keep practitioners and community activists working together in positive ways
- evaluate reform efforts and make adjustments based on evaluation data
Topics include:
- theories of battering and their implications for intervention
- the basic activities and components of a coordinated community response
- building a common philosophical framework
- practical skills on policy development, building working relationships with practitioners, and assessing dangerousness of offenders
- networking and information sharing
- using a database to track offenders through law enforcement and the court system
- providing domestic violence training for specific disciplines.
Opportunities for police ride-alongs, observations at men’s nonviolence classes, and meetings with counterparts will be available. Training materials include the manual Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Assault Cases: A Guide for Policy Development and other handouts.
